Pancreas Treatments

1. Insulin

When the insulin generating cells in the pancreas get damaged, the body becomes dependent on insulin injection through the skin to make sure glucose gets absorbed into the body tissues and regulate the blood sugar levels. Insulin can be purified from various animal sources, and it can also be created in medical laboratories.

2. Islet cell transplantation

In certain diabetes type 1 cases, insulin generating cells are harvested from a donor organ’s pancreas, and then transplanted into the pancreas of the patient. Even though this procedure is still under experimentation, it has cured several diabetes type 1 cases effectively.

3. Pancreatic cancer resection

Also known as the Whipple procedure, this is a surgical operation to eliminate pancreatic cancer. The surgeon takes out the head of the pancreas, the first section of the small intestine called the duodenum, and the gallbladder. In certain rare cases, a small piece of the stomach is also taken out.

4. Pancreatic enzymes

Patients suffering cystic fibrosis are often prescribed oral pancreatic enzymes to replace the enzymes that are not being produced by the pancreas.
