Data was obtained from three different types of MRI scans: A traditional or structural MRI, which created a static map of the gray matter within the brain. A functional MRI, which created a map to trace out all brain functioning, highlighting the areas of brain activity as it takes places. And diffusion MRI, which utilises water diffusion to provide a map of the wiring of the brain.

Moreover, research was also conducted in a distinguished manner, using three independent subject cohorts. The participants were walked through the same series of questions to examine their ability of thinking and other cognitive processes. The fusion analysis was used to examine the brain patterns obtained from all three of the MRI scans, which were examined against the cognitive scores of the participants.

The results obtained from the data fusion, which was extracted after performing a joint-analysis of all three of the images, created a ground-breaking image that has never been created before, and forms a link between the brain and cognition. Even more important is the revelation that all three of these independent variables revealed similar results.

Experts reveal that there is a significant associated between the three sets of data that have been obtained from the results, and after replication, the results revealed that brain wiring, structuring and functioning play vital roles in determining the growth of various cognitive abilities.

The research also compared the fusion results with patients suffering from schizophrenia. The researchers revealed that this comparison was important as cognitive impairments are one of the most prominent symptoms of mental ailments, particularly like schizophrenia. Moreover, they explained that comparing brain patterns related to cognition can aid in identifying patients that are at risk of developing certain kinds of mental ailments.
