Cakes are perfect for any kind of celebrations either for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, or for any special occasion. They spice up the occasion by adding sweet flavour to the environment. In older times cakes were made like only sponge cakes, or the normal cakes covered with cream and pineapples. But with time, there’s so much diversity in the line of cakes and they are just not available in huge and expensive bakeries or cafes but you can also bake them at home with hundreds of different recipes and great tastes. Some ingredients like chocolate, chocolate chips, strawberries, either fresh or the syrup, coconut, either in cream or in raw, and cookies like Oreo have become the most important cake items of the present time. Last weekend, I went to a friend’s place, at her little brother’s birthday and everyone was drooling over the cake they brought. That was an Oreo chocolate cake, which was so much fresh and moist plus it has great taste. And to my amazement, her mother told me that, that cake was not brought by any expensive baker but it was baked by her mother herself. SURPRISE!!!
Listening to this, my mouth fell open because the cake was the perfect combo of moist and dense chocolate cake, with chocolate and Oreo combined frosting inside the cake than the whole cake was covered by this delicious frosting and a lot of crushed Oreos on top. Doesn’t it even sound delicious? Of course it does.
Oreos have always been my most favourite cookies because they are so unique and so tasty. Even when kids eat the inside filling, I don’t mind eating leftover outer part of the cookie, that’s how I love Oreos. To be honest, I didn’t know that I can make a lot of desserts using Oreos like shakes, trifles, cakes and even puddings. So this is another reason behind my increased cravings of cake that this cake is all covered with Oreos.
This a layer by layer cake, made up from normal flour and cake stuff and the special thing about this cake is the Hershey’s dark chocolate powder that brings about the great and dense dark chocolate taste and colour. There’s no fancy procedure to make this cake, this is simple chocolate cake, just designed in a special way. In between the cake, the Oreos comes combined with cream to make yummy frosting then there’s another cake layer again Oreo frosting then a lot of Oreo frosting and a lot of crushed Oreos. Just make sure when you slice the cake there should be a lot and a lot of Oreos in every slice and every bite should cover up with all Oreos.
Ingredients:
CHOCOLATE CAKE
- 2 cups (260g) flour
- 2 cups (414g) sugar
- 3/4 cup (85g) Hershey’s Special Dark Cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
- 1 cup (240ml) vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup (240ml) boiling water
OREO ICING
- 1 1/2 cups (336g) butter
- 1 1/2 cups (284g) shortening
- 8-9 cups (920g-1035g) powdered sugar
- 3 cups Oreo crumbs (about 30 Oreos)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 6-7 tbsp (90ml-105ml) water
- 5 Oreos, chopped, optional
Directions:
Preheat the oven at 300 degrees, and grease 3 different pans of 9 inches with butter. Putt parchment papers at the bottom of the pans and grease after that. I’m often asked that 300 degrees is too slow but no, chocolate cakes are usually cooked in the slow heat, so this is perfect.
Take a large bowl and add all dry ingredients and whisk together while you mix the wet ones.
Take another bowl and put buttermilk, eggs and vegetable oil and whisk with a spatula before you pour them to dry ingredients.
Once they are mixed, pour this egg mixture into the dry ingredients and beat with electric beater. Now add boiling water and vanilla extract and mix well.
Divide this mixture in already greased pans and bake for about 25-30 minutes. And remove when the toothpick comes out with few cake crumbs on it. Let them cool for 10 minutes before you put them on a cake stand and prepare the icing. Make sure when you apply the icing, your cakes are absolutely cool because hot cakes will thin out the icing and it will not spread evenly.
Icing Procedure:
Take a deep bowl and beat shortening and butter together until creamy. Then add 4 cups of sugar one by one and keep beating until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Now add crushed Oreos and vanilla and another 4-5 cups of sugar while you keep beating. You can add milk or water to get your desired consistency.
When cakes are absolutely cool, remove the upper layer of the cakes with sharp knife and spread Oreo icing over it and spread with spatula now place 2nd layer of the cake and spread remaining Oreo icing over it and spread evenly, now place 3rd and final layer of cakes and spread the Oreo icing over it and cover the whole cake with even and smooth icing.
Spread crushed Oreos all over the cake and place whole cookies at the top for decoration.
Place in fried before serving and serve cool.
I’m going to try this for my husband for Father’s Day
