The appendix is around 4 inches long and its shape is like that of a thin tube. It is located between the large and small intestine, towards the right of your lower abdominal region. Medical science has not yet been unable to identify the exact bodily responsibilities or functions performed by the appendix.

Some doctors believe that it is responsible for storing good bacteria, which helps revive the digestive system after a severe bout of diarrhea. Another theory states that the appendix is nothing more than a useless body organ that the human body can function without. And that is why surgical removal of the appendix has emerged as the only treatment for appendix ailments, and it has not reported any health ailments.

1. Appendicitis

In certain instances, the appendix gets inflamed and an infection begins to seep within, eventually leading to a rupture. It accompanies symptoms such as vomiting, nausea and severe pain in the lower region of the abdomen.

2. Tumors in the appendix

There are several kinds of tumors that can take birth within the appendix. For instance, epithelial tumors grown in the appendix, and they can be either cancerous or benign. Carcinoid tumors secrete chemicals within the appendix, which leads to diarrhea, wheezing and periodic flushing. However, cases of appendix tumors tend to be extremely rare.
